自訂車牌有一定限制。例如總數不得超過8個，而為避免和數字混淆，不得使用英文字母「I」、「O」及「Q」。另外，車牌號碼又不能低俗不雅或令人反感，不能帶有三合會含意，或在執法方面造成混淆。
